About

Where geography, material, and memory take form.

Jonas Mikolayunas

My work begins where art and engineering meet. I create dimensional relief sculptures from real terrain data, but the deeper subject is the relationship between people and place—the mountains, coastlines, islands, and trails that become part of a life.

I keep the practice commission-based because every piece asks something new. A geography I have not carved before. A story I have not yet translated. A set of technical and material questions that cannot be answered by repeating what came before. That challenge structures the practice.

Each commission becomes a kind of exploration. The story is listened to, studied, taken apart, and rebuilt through terrain, wood, resin, finish, and frame. The work asks for precision, but also intuition: knowing what to preserve, what to emphasize, and where the emotional weight of the place lives.

When a piece asks more than I already know, the studio grows to meet it. New materials are tested. New methods are learned. The toolkit expands, and the next work begins from a wider horizon. In that way, the practice stays alive—each commission refining the last while opening the next.

The practice is exploration: not into distant ice or unmapped wilderness, but into the places that anchor people's lives. Each work becomes a record of that crossing—a way of giving form to the geography of memory.

Approach

Place as Identity

Geography isn’t just scenery. It’s where memory lives. The landscapes that shape us deserve to be held as art, never reduced to souvenirs or screens.

One-of-One

Every piece is made individually for one client, from one place. Each commission is approached with equal care for the geography itself and the craft required to honor it. The relationship is personal and deliberate.

Data Meets Artistry

The work begins with scientific precision (real elevation data, accurate contours) and is finished by hand. Precision carving preserves fidelity; wood selection, resin color, and finishing bring warmth and presence.

Built to Last

These pieces are built to outlast trends, withstand moves, and hold meaning for decades. Premium materials and time-tested joinery ensure structural stability and longevity. This is craft made with permanence in mind.
